Box Score 2 DARTMOUTH, Mass. - The Western Connecticut State University baseball team scored a season-high 19 runs in the doubleheader-opening 19-10 victory over University of Massachusetts Dartmouth on a sunny Friday afternoon at UMD Baseball Park. The Corsairs captured the nightcap, 13-2, to close out the nearly seven hour twin bill.
In game one, the Wolves had their highest run output since defeating Lehman College, 20-12 back on April 26, 2018.
Freshman designated hitter
Nicholas Moeller led the 16-hit attack by going 3-for-6 with his team-leading third home run of the season in WestConn's eight-run eighth inning.
Five other players,
Zach Edwards,
Joe Gambino,
Zachary Royka,
Jake Montas, Riley McQuire and
Cameron Bogli, registered two hits for the winners. McQuire drove in three runs while Edwards, Gambino, Moeller, Montas and
Max Gregory each scored three runs in the opener.
The Wolves trailed 7-2 after an inning and a half, but went on to outscore the Corsairs, 13-2, from the bottom of the fifth inning until the final out.
Orlando Swift went the first five innings on the bump for WestConn. He allowed eight runs, seven of them earned, on eight hits, struck out six and walked three.
Justin Grullon went two and a third innings and earned the victory before
Michael Kolf recorded the final five outs. Grullon allowed a pair of runs on four hits, struck out one and walked four Corsairs and is now 1-4 on the season. Kolf was un-hittable and struck out two down the stretch.
In the second game, seven different Wolves registered a hit and Gambino was credited with his team's only run batted in.
Mason Blanchett suffered the loss and is now 1-2 on the year. In five and a third innings, he allowed seven runs, six of them earned, on 10 hits, struck out two and walked three. He also hit two Corsairs.
WestConn, now 6-13 overall and 2-7 in the highly competitive Little East Conference, travel from eastern Massachusetts to Keene, N.H. for a league doubleheader against the Owls tomorrow. First pitch between the Wolves and Keene State College is slated for noon.
