Andrea DeVoe Opens A New Era In Western Women's Soccer With Overtime Winner

Box Score

DANBURY, CT - Junior midfielder Andrea DeVoe (Farmington, CT) scored the game-winning goal with 8:18 remaining in the second overtime to lift host Western Connecticut State University to a 1-0 victory over Farmingdale State College at The WAC on Thursday.

Andrea DeVoe (the younger sister to Western captain Celia DeVoe) notched the deciding marker following a pass across the box to the left side from sophomore Lucy Daniels (Bethel, CT).

The match was deadlocked with Western tallying 17 shots to the Rams 13 before Andrea DeVoe's winner.  Western's Celia DeVoe (Farmington, CT) and Autumn Sorice (Bethel, CT) each had an attempt carom off the crossbar and right post, respectively.  Alexandria Tudisco (Massapequa, NY) had one of her team-leading shots at goal nick the crossbar for the Rams.

Junior netminder Jillian Fernandez (Columbia, CT) earned the clean sheet, making a pair of saves for the Colonials.

Daniela Ford (Elmont, NY) suffered the loss after coming on for starter Karla Gomes (Carle Place, NY) after 45 minutes of play.  Ford made four saves while Gomes turned away one of Western's attempts.

Thursday's win marked the beginning of a new era for the Colonials - both the women's and men's programs.  Alex Harrison took the helm of the women's program after legendary mentor Joe Mingachos grabbed the reins of the men's program after 19-years as head coach of the women's team.  Mingachos recorded 298 victories, was never below .500 and appeared in 11 NCAA Tournament before taking over a program he was an All-American for in the late 1980s.
