WESTFIELD, Mass. —
Shannon Anderson (New Milford, Conn.) dominated offensively with three points in the Western Connecticut State University women's soccer team's 2-1 season-opening win on the road at Westfield State University at Alumni Field on Tuesday. The Wolves kicked off the season 1-0, while the Owls dropped to 0-1 overall.
Westfield took a 1-0 lead in the 17th minute, but it was short-lived. Anderson knotted the game at one apiece 10 minutes later in the 27th minute from the 30-yard line.
Scarlett Kovarczi (Shelton, Conn.) intercepted an attempted clear by the Owls, then quickly passed to
Morgan Marcuss (Meriden, Conn.) in Wolves territory before Marcuss' side pass to Anderson for the long shot just over the goalkeeper's hands.
WestConn grabbed a one-goal edge in the 63rd minute off the foot of first-year
Leah Tomeo (West Islip, N.Y.) and assisted by Anderson. Anderson attempted a cross on the run, but an Owls defender redirected it to goalkeeper Kayla Santucci; Santucci couldn't maintain possession, allowing Tomeo to capitalize on the loose ball.
Gracen Regan (Monroe, N.J.) stood tall in the net for the Wolves with 12 saves. For Westfield, Santucci nabbed eight saves in 66 minutes of action, while Mady Harmon made one save in 23 minutes and Katie Valentine faced no shots for the remainder of regulation.
WestConn debuts on the new turf next on Thursday at 7 p.m. against the United States Merchant Marine Academy at the Westside Stadium.
