DANBURY, Conn. - After a season-opening win earlier this week, the Western Connecticut State University women's soccer team played to a 1-1 tie against the visiting United States Merchant Marine Academy on Thursday evening at the Westside Athletic Complex. Rookie forward
Leah Tomeo (West Islip, N.Y) gathered a rebound and fired home her second goal of the campaign midway through the second half to knot up the score.
Despite controlling the majority of play, the hosts fell behind in the first half when sophomore forward Stella Newman (Columbus, OH) took a short cross from rookie forward Hailey Catolico (Apex, N.C) and found the back of the net.
The Wolves continued to apply the pressure in the second half. However, the story of the game were the Mariner goalies. Junior Eva Fields (Williamsburg, Va.) played the first stanza and turned aside a point blank shot off from a WestConn player to keep the contest scoreless. Sophomore Charli Warren (Atlanta, Ga. ) protected the twine in the second period and racked up two breakaway stops.
However, the Wolves finally netted the equalizer when Tomeo tapped in the rebound. With the tie, WestConn moved to 1-0-1 overall while USMMA went to 0-0-1. The Wolves return to action on Saturday when they host Salve Regina in a non-conference tilt.
