Box Score DANBURY, CT - Junior wideout Tanner Williams (Eagle Bridge, NY) caught 13 passes for 255 yards and scored three touchdowns to help lift visiting Hartwick College to a come-from-behind, 43-38 victory over Western Connecticut State University at the Westside Athletic Complex.
The Hawks, 1-0, made the best of a night's rest at local hotels as they came back from a 31-20 half-time deficit - on Saturday night. The game was suspended after a two-hour lightning delay and restarted on Sunday afternoon.
Greg Bell, a 5-11, 242-pound runningback, scored the Hawks' final two touchdowns. A three-yard plunge with 5:54 remaining shadowed the game-winning run, a one-yard push behind the center with 3:17 left the game.
The Colonials struck first in the bright sunlight when junior Connor Falaguerra (Milford, CT) caught a 30-yard touchdown pass from senior signal caller Will Arndt (Newtown, CT) with 7:13 left in the third quarter. That gave Western a 38-20 advantage.
Falaguerra finished the game with five catches for 156 yards and two touchdowns. Nearly 18 hours earlier, he connected with Arndt for a 61-yards TD and a 14-7 lead for the home team.
Hartwick began its comeback at the 3:28 mark of the third stanza when Sam Clark (Jersey City, NJ) booted a 32 yard field goal, moving within 15 points, 38-23.
Willams and John Garcia (Warwick, NY) hooked up for a 15-yard TD reception with 2:10 elapsed in the final quarter. A missed point-after try by Clark kept the Colonials' advantage to two scores.
Garcia , a 6-2 junior, completed 28 of 46 passes for 413 yards and four touchdowns.
John Horner (Queens Village, NY) scored a three-yard TD with 4:30 remaining in the second quarter on Saturday.
Arndt, who completed 12 of 21 passes for 195 and two touchdowns prior to the skies opening last night, finished the game completing 20 of 38 passes for 297 yards and one more scoring toss.
Western junior Alex Altermatt (Branford, CT) led the Western receiving corps with 10 catches for 123 yards. He nearly came down with Arndt's desperation heave in the endzone as the clock expired.
Defensively, Hartwick puzzled and kept continued pressure on Arndt on Sunday.
Michael Servider (Carmel, NY) led the Hawks with seven tackles while Jared Marrow (Ogdensburg, NY) and Zach Pitcher (Rhinebeck, NY) collected five take downs apiece for the winners.
Senior Jacob Jean-Baptiste (Bridgeport, CT) led all players with 12 tackles and had one break up.
Sunday's loss for Western ends a five-game win streak which was capped off by last season's ECAC Northeast Bowl Championship victory over Salve Regina.
Western continues its season-opening three-game homestand next Saturday when it plays host to Nichols College at noon. Hartwick take on Morrisville State College in Oneonta, NY at 1 pm on September 13.
