Box Score WEST HARTFORD, CT – Senior midfielder Sarah Menta (Newington, Conn.) had a goal and an assist to help the Western Conn. State University women's soccer team to a 4-0 victory over the University of Saint Joseph Saturday in a non-conference game at USJ.
Both teams are 2-2 on the young season.
USJ goalkeeper Melissa Dodge (Watertown, Conn.) made a career-high 14 saves, but Western outshot St. Joseph 27-8 (shots on goal were 18-4) and had an 8-1 edge in corners. The Colonials enjoyed a 14-1 edge in first-half shots in building a 2-0 halftime lead before St. Joseph generated most of its offensive chances after the break.
Rebecca Rivera (Monroe, Conn.) scored the first goal 28:45 into the game when she converted from the middle of the box off a corner kick from Celia DeVoe (Farmington, Conn.) Jerissa Goncalves (Farmington, Conn.) was the recipient of a perfect goalmouth cross from Menta and Goncalves scored on a tap-in to the lower left corner at make it 2-0 at 36:58.
Menta got taken down at the top of the box 6:30 into the second half and her ensuing penalty kick found the upper left corner for a 3-0 Western edge. Andrea DeVoe (Farmington, Conn.) scored the final goal in the 77th minute when she headed home a corner from Brianne Rehaag (New Milford, Conn.)
Western's starting keeper Jillian Fernandez (Columbia, Conn.) made three saves and Jenna Santoriello (Smithtown, N.Y.) made one in the final seven minutes to combine on the shutout. Melissa Dodge (Watertown, Conn.) made 14 saves for USJ.
USJ hosts Simmons Sat. Sept. 13 as the Blue Jays open play in the GNAC in a 1 p.m. start.
