Box Score DANBURY, CT - Senior runningback Tory Mack (Stratford, CT) scored a pair of touchdowns and the Western Connecticut State University football team held on to defeat visiting University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, 30-14 at The WAC on Senior Day on Saturday.
Mack rushed for 86 yards on 17 carries and scored touchdowns of five and 26 yards, which turned out to be the game's first and last scores for the winners.
He capped off a six-play, 82-yard drive with the five-yard scamper. It was his team-leading 17th TD of the season.
The Corsairs, 3-6 overall and 2-5 in the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference, drew even 41 seconds later when sophomore quarterback Cory Burnham (Essex, MA) scored from 65 yards out on a QB draw up the middle.
The visitors took their only lead of the game, 14-7, with 2:27 remaining in the first quarter when Derek Tarpey (Tewksbury, MA) returned a Michael Nicol (Wolcott, CT) interception 39 yards.
Tarpey was everywhere on defense on Saturday, finishing with 17 total tackles and two take downs for a loss of five yards. Ten of his tackles were of the solo variety.
With 18 seconds remaining in the first half, Colonials' junior wide receiver Connor Falaguerra (Milford, CT) escaped the grasp of the UMD defender and raced 48 yards to the right endzone marker for his team-leading eighth receiving touchdown of the season. That knotted the game at 14-14 heading into the break.
Both teams struggled to produce offensively throughout the third quarter as the winds out of the northeast continued to swirl.
It was at the 11:01 mark of the final quarter when Burnham was flagged for intentional grounding in his own endzone and Western was awarded with a safety to take a 16-14 lead.
The Colonials, now 6-3 overall and 5-2 and in second place in the MASCAC, tacked on two more scores before the final horn.
Junior receiver Alex Altermatt (Branford, CT) and Nicol hooked up for a 23-yard scoring pass and Mack finished his last regular-season home game with the 26-yard jaunt up the middle with 4:19 left in the game.
Nicol finished the day completing 14 of 26 passes for 188 yards and two touchdowns. He was intercepted three times. His ground attack was the difference as he rushed a 22 times for 118 yards, both game highs.
Burnham completed 12 of 28 passes for 88 yards, was intercepted once (by Bobby Durham (New Haven, CT) and sacked twice on Saturday. He led the Corsairs with 67 yards on five carries.
Defensively, Delshawn Wilson (Norwalk, CT) led Western with eight tackles and had a fumble recovery.
The Colonials held a 393-242 advantage on total offensive yards, but just one minutes separated the teams in time of possession (30:30-29:30).
Western, the defending ECAC Northeast Bowl Champions, will enjoy its bye week then close out the regular season at Westfield State University on Friday, November 14. Game time with the Owls is slated for 7 pm. A victory will put the Colonials at 7-3 and an outside chance to earn another ECAC Bowl berth.
UMass Dartmouth plays host to Fitchburg State University on November 8. Kick-off is scheduled for 1 pm.
