Box Score UNION, NJ - With the score tied 1-1 at the half, the Western Connecticut State University women's soccer team outshot Kean University 19-5 in the second half and in overtime, but failed to score, settling for a 1-1 tie Wednesday evening.
After allowing Kean an early goal in the games seventh minute, freshman Samantha Carbonell (Plainville, CT) scored an unassisted goal, after a failed clear by the Kean defense, at the 38:01 mark of the first half to even the score at 1-1.
In the second half, Western outshot Kean 11-3, but neither team managed to overcome the rain and soggy conditions to score a goal.
In the two overtime periods, Western again outshot Kean, this time by an 8-2 margin, but after 20 extra minutes of play, the final result was a 1-1 tie.
For the game, Western held a 28-10 overall advantage in shots, while Kean had the slight edge in corner kicks, 3-2. Western's freshman keeper Jillian Fernandez (Columbia, CT) finished with four saves on the night.
With the tie, Western's season record now stands at 12-4-1, while Kean moves to 9-5-2. The Colonials return to action on Saturday, October 25, when they travel to play Little East Conference rival Keene State. Game time is scheduled for 1:00pm.
