Women's Soccer Rolls Past RIC on Senior Night

DANBURY, Conn. - The Western Connecticut State University women's soccer team rolled to a 2-0 victory over visiting Little East Conference opponent Rhode Island College on Friday evening at the Westside Athletic Complex. Miranda Martincic (Whitestone, N.Y.), Sophia Onek (Lake Ronkonkoma, N.Y.), Gigi Amatulli (Danbury, Conn.), Emily Farrell (West Hempstead, N.Y.), Hannah Blacher (Allendale, N.J.), Gia Giorgianni (Easton, Conn.) and Casey Papp (Seaford, N.Y.) were honored before the contest on Senior Night for the Wolves.

WestConn dominated play with an 18-4 advantage in shots. Despite the lopsided advantage, it took a while for the Wolves to break through. Rookie midfielder Olga Mayen (Brookfield, Conn.) nearly broke the ice late in the first half. However, her blast knocked off the right post. RIC countered with a pair of scoring opportunities but their shots sailed awry.

The Wolves finally found the back of the net less than a minute before the break when junior forward Morgan Fontaine (Stamford, Conn.) took a nifty pass from Blacher and ripped a shot into the twine for her third goal of the season.

The Anchorwomen retaliated with numerous rushes up the field to begin the second half but the WestConn defense held strong as they limited their shot attempts to prevent the equalizer. The hosts added an insurance tally in the 78th minute of play when junior forward Abby Corcoran (Newington, Conn.) blasted a shot off the iron that caromed off the RIC netminder and found its way across the stripe, widening the gap to 2-0. Rookie forward Morgan Marcuss (Meriden, Conn.) earned an assist on the play.

WestConn junior goalie Gracen Regan (Monroe, N.J) improved to 9-4-2 while notching a trio of saves. RIC first-year Oceanna Orlandi (East Greenwich, R.I.) shielded the twine and took the loss, moving to 6-5 while accumulating seven stops.

The Wolves - now 10-5-2 overall and 4-1-1 in league play -  return to action on Wednesday at 5 p.m. when they hit the road to battle LEC archrival Eastern Connecticut. The Anchorwomen sank to 8-5 and 3-2
