Tory Mack scores in OT to lead Western over Fitchburg State, 20-14

FITCHBURG, MA - Senior running back Tory Mack (Stratford, CT) scored on a one-yard run in overtime to give the Western Connecticut State University football team a 20-14 victory over Fitchburg State Saturday afternoon.

Mack gave Western a 7-0 lead in the first quarter of play on a six-yard run that capped a five-play, 45-yard drive.

The score remained 7-0 going into the locker room at intermission.

In the third quarter, Mack scored his second touchdown of the day, this time from five yards out, to give Western a 14-0 lead.

With just over one minute remaining in the third quarter, Fitchburg State finally got on the board, but when its extra point attempt was blocked, the Western lead was 14-6.

Midway through the fourth quarter, Fitchburg State's Kendall Perry scored on a five-yard run to make the score 14-12, but a successful two-point conversion tied the score at 14-14.

When neither team scored again in regulation, the game headed to overtime.

Fitchburg State got the ball to start the overtime period and moved the ball to the Western five yard line, where it faced first and goal.  After Perry gained three yards, moving the ball to the two yard line, the Western defense held Fitchburg State on its next three attempts to push into the endzone, including two plays for no gain inches from the Western goal line.

Western began its OT drive with two Mack runs before sophomore quarterback Michael Nichol (Wolcott, CT) scrambled for 18 yards to the Fitchburg State one yard line.  On the next play, Mack punched the ball into the endzone, giving Western a 20-14 victory.

For the game, Mack finished with 112 yards and three touchdowns on 33 carries.  Nichol was 10 of 14 passing for 96 yards, while also adding 69 yards rushing on 20 carries.

Senior punter Ryan Falaguerra (Milford, CT) had a busy day with 11 punts, averaging 40.1 yards per kick.

With the win, Western moves to 5-2 on the season, 4-1 in conference play.  Fitchburg State is also 5-2, but falls to 3-2 in the conference.

The Colonials return to action next Saturday, October 25, when they host Worcester State on Homecoming Day at 5:00pm.
