Box Score 2 DANBURY, CT - The Western Connecticut State University women's soccer team came from behind to tie Kean University, but was unable to put away the game-winner and settled for a 1-1 decision at The WAC on Monday night.
Kean University's Sam Marchetti (Wall Township, NJ) put the Cougars up 1-0 when she headed home a lead pass a crossing pass from Carly Snyder (Point Pleasant, NJ) in the 25th minute. Marchetti found herself open to the left of the far goal post and lightly headed the ball by Western keeper Alison Rettenmeier (Sherman, CT).
With 5:09 remaining in the first half, sophomore back Rebecca Rivera (Monroe, CT) was able to put away a header off the corner kick from freshman Celia DeVoe (Farmington, CT). It was Devoe's Little East Conference leading 12th assist of the season. The next closest LEC player has five assists on the season.
Both teams had several chances to take a lead or win the game in the extra frames.
With 13 seconds remaining in the first overtime, junior midfielder Sarah Menta (Newington, CT) was led into the box with a nice lead pass from senior Ariana D'Aurio (Cheshire, CT), but was able to get a solid shot off her left foot for the Colonials.
Earlier in regulation, the Cougars, now 8-4-3, unleashed a barrage of shots and corner kicks but Rettenmeier and her defense withstood the challange. She finished the night with six saves.
For Kean, KC Nunez (Fair Lawn, NJ) maded nine saves after coming on for starter Samantha Blair (Freehold, NJ) in the 33rd minute.
The Colonials, now 10-6-1, play host to LEC rival Keene State College this Saturday, October 26. Game time is slated for 4 pm.
