Box Score DANBURY, CT - Another game, another re-writing of the record books as senior running back Octavias McKoy (Stratford, CT) rushed 22 times for 226 yards and tied his own record of five touchdowns in Western Connecticut State University's 70-14 victory over Fitchburg State University at The WAC on Saturday night.
On Saturday, McKoy set a new seasonal mark with 18 touchowns, surpassing Ben LaBelle's mark of 16 set in 2000.
McKoy scored on runs of 36, 14, 16, 14 and 29 yards, respectively before being summoned to the bench for the final quarter of play. A week ago, he scored five rushing touchdowns, but the Colonials dropped a heart-breaker, 54-53, to Massachusetts Maritime.
Also setting new a school record was sophomore kicker Michael Killoran (West Hartford, CT) who convertted all 10 of his extra-point attempts.
Western's 70 points surpasses the old mark of 67 points scored in its shut-out victory over William Paterson University in 2003. The Colonials also surpassed the team mark with 606 total offensive yards, narrowly eclipsing the 592 standard set against Springfield College in 2005.
Western improves to 4-2 overall and are now 3-2 in the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference while the Falcons drop to 3-4 overall an 2-3 in the league.
After holding Fitchburg State to three plays on its first possession, Western began its first drive with good field position at the 32 yard line in spite of a 53-yard Fitchburg State punt. The Colonials wasted little time in going 68 yards in five plays to take a 7-0 lead when junior Will Arndt (Sandy Hook, CT) connected with sophomore Connor Falaguerra (Milford, CT) down the left side-line for a 51 touchdown pass, giving Western the early lead.
On Fitchburg State's next possession, the Falcons moved the ball into the Western end of the field, but freshman defensive back Devante Credle (West Haven, CT) intercepted a pass by freshman Garrett Dellechiaie (Leominster, MA), putting the Western offense back on the field.
Arndt found Falaguerra again for a 35-yard completion, and on the game's next play McKoy burst through the left side of the line and sprinted 36 yards for the second Western touchdown of the day and a 14-0 lead with 5:46 remaining in the first quarter.
On the ensuing Western kickoff, freshman Taylor Wrice (Malden, MA) received the kick at the nine yard line and ran 91 yards up the left side to put the Falcons on the board and narrow the Western lead to 14-7.
A Fitchburg punt gave Western the ball at its own 20 yard line to start the second quarter. The Colonials put together a drive that took just under four minutes and covered 80 yards in eight plays to extend the lead to 21-7. A defensive pass-interference call inside the Fitchburg State five yard line, intended for sophomore Darence Delgado (Bristol, CT), gave Western a first down at the Falcon 14.
On the next play, McKoy took the handoff from Arndt and met two FSU defenders as he approached the right side of the offensive line. McKoy spun away from both would-be tacklers, reversed his field, and then ran untouched into the left corner of the endzone for his second touchdown of the day and a 21-7 Western lead.
The Western defense again held the Fitchburg State offense to a three-and-out, forcing the Falcons to punt.
The Colonials took possession of the ball at their 33 yard line and again marched the ball into Fitchburg State territory. Facing a second-and-13 at the Fitchburg State 16, McKoy broke two tackles as he ran around the right side and into the endzone for his third touchdown of the day. In addition to putting Western ahead 28-7, McKoy's run also tied the Western single-season touchdown mark of 16.
Western's defense continued to overpower the Fitchburg offense, forcing the Falcon offense to lose seven yards on three plays, resulting in another punt for the visitors. Western begin with the ball at its 37 yard line and on the first play from scrimmage, Arndt ran the ball down the right side-line, benefitted from a timely block by Falaguerra, and scored to give the Colonials a 35-7 lead.
The Fitchburg offense finally gained some momentum and put together an eight-play, 80-yard drive. On first and goal at the Western 10, Dellechiaie found junior Ty Spencer (Foxboro, MA) in the end-zone for a touchdown to narrow the Western margin to 35-14 with :45 seconds remaining in the half.
Both teams went three-and-out to start the second half.
On Western's second possession of the third quarter, the Colonials started with the ball on the 19 yard line and moved 81 yards in 11 plays. Arndt's runs of 10 and 21 yards helped move the ball to the Fitchburg State 18 yard line. On third and six, McKoy again burst through the middle of the Falcon defense for his fourth touchdown of the day and a 42-14 Western lead.
On the second play of Fitchburg State's next possession, freshman Jacobson Jean-Baptiste (Bridgeport, CT) intercepted a pass, giving Western the ball on its own 37.
On fourth and two at the Falcon 29 yard line, McKoy continued his record-breaking performance with a 29-yard touchdown run for his fifth score of the day. Western's lead grew to 49-14
After mishandling the kickoff, Fitchburg State began with the ball at its own eight yard line. An interception and nine-yard return by junior Trevor Treibt (Brookfield, CT) turned the ball over to Western for a first and goal at the Falcon five. A Fitchburg State penalty put the ball just inside the three and on the next play, freshman Eddy Williams (West Haven, CT) ran the ball in for a 56-14 Western lead as the third quarter ended.
On the first play of the fourth quarter, Fitchburg State's fumble was recovered by Triebt and the junior returned the ball to the end-zone for a 63-14 Western led.
Western's final scoring drive began at the Colonial 20. Nine plays and 80 yards later, Western added to its lead, for a final margin of 70-14. The final play of the drive was a 32-yard touch-down run by junior Chris Elser (Southbury, CT).
Arndt had a solid outing completing 12 of 21 passes for 184 yards and a score. He followed McKoy with 108 yards on 8 carries including a 63-yards jaunt into paydirt.
Connor Falaguarra led Western's receiving corps with five catches for 122 yards and a TD.
Defensively, Bill Birdsell (Newtown, CT) and Michael Lacaria (Watertown, CT) led the winners with eight and seven tackles, respectively.
Teven Bienaime (Swansea, MA) and Taron Seaforth (Lynn, MA) had six and five tackles for the Falcons, respectively.
The Colonials travel to Worcester State University next Saturday to take on the Lancers at 1:30 pm.
