DANBURY, Conn. - Sophomore Alex Maldonado (Danbury, Conn.) won in singles and doubles, but the Western Connecticut State University Wolves were beaten, 5-2, by the SUNY Purchase Panthers in men's tennis action this afternoon.  WestConn, now 1-7, will get right back to the courts when they host Little East Conference (LEC) rival University of Southern Maine tomorrow at 1 p.m.  Purchase improves to 4-2.

In doubles, Maldonado teamed with sophomore partner Henry Gsell (Bridgewater, Conn.) for a 6-3 win at the bottom of the ladder.  At second doubles, sophomores Jack Buck (New Fairfield, Conn.) and Jose Zambrano (Danbury, Conn.) held a 5-4 lead before losing the final three games in a 7-5 setback.  Purchase had won, 6-3, at first doubles to secure the doubles point.

In singles, with only 4 courts available for safe play due to rainy weather this week, Westconn  got a quick point when Maldonado won, 6-0, 6-1 at the No. 4 spot. #4 won his match. Purchase won in straight sets at the top three positions to clinch the team decision before Wolves junior John Araujo (Danbury, Conn.) battled his way through a 7-5, 7-5 victory at fifth singles.  Sophomore Axel Javier (Danbury, Conn.) forced tied his second set at 6-6 before losing in two sets at sixth singles for WestConn.
Araujo #5 won his match for WestConn. 

This was just another match gone by with missed opportunities," said WestConn Head Coach Shawn Stillman. "We are putting ourselves in position to win courts, butwe just need to get it done."
