DANBURY, Conn. - Freshman
Luke Bayliss (Branford, Conn.) won in singles and doubles but the Western Connecticut State University Wolves lost, 4-3, to the Mount St. Mary College Knights in men's tennis action for the second time in eight days this afternoon at Westside Courts. WestConn finished the fall at 0-2 and the Knights move to 3-0. The Wolves will resume in the spring semester.
WestConn earned the doubles point, as Bayliss and rookie teammate
Harel Koblenz (Woodbridge, Conn.) rolled, 6-0, at the bottom of the ladder and juniors John Buck (New Fairfield, Conn.) and and
Jose Zambrano (Danbury, Conn.) closed out a 6-4 victory at the top of the ladder on a Buck serve.
In singles, needing three courts for the win, WestConn fell behind, 2-1, early but Baylis snf junior
Axel Javier (Danbury, Conn.) won in straight sets at the No. 5 and No. 6 sports to put the home team back ahead, 3-2. Koblenz was tied 1-1 at the top of the lineup, coming back from a 6-1 loss in the first to take the second, 6-3, and took a 5-4 lead in the third set but lost three games in a row to take the loss. Zambrano lost at third singles by exactly the same scores as Koblenz.
"This match couldn't have been any closer," said WestConn Head Coach
Shawn Stillman. "It's tough to not get the win when we had two courts on the verge of clinching the victory. Nerves play a big part in this game. It's great that we put ourselves in position to win, we just have to close it out."
