Box Score NEWBURGH, N.Y. - The Western Connecticut State University played one of its two dual matches against the Mount St. Mary College Knights this evening. Playing on the road, WestConn fell, 4-3, in a tightly-contested match. WestConn falls to 0-1 while the Knights improve to 1-1. The teams will close out the fall slate in Danbury when the Wolves welcome the Knights on Tuesday, October 13 at 4:30 p.m.
In doubles, the Knights earned the point despite a 6-2 victory by senior
John Araujo (Bethel, Conn.) and junior
Henry Gsell (Bridgewater, Conn.) at the bottom of the ladder. The singles results came down to the wire as Mount St. Mary took took a 3-1 lead including victories at the top two spots on the ladder. Wolves junior John Buck (New Fairfield, Conn.) got the Wolves on the board with a dominating win at fifth singles, 6-1, 6-1.
With three courts in play and the Wolves needed victories at each one to steal the match, junior
Axel Javier (Danbury, Conn.) and freshman Harel Koblentz (Woodbridge, Conn.) were able to tie the team score at 3-3. Koblenz won his first career match in straight sets at third singles and Javier took the third set, 6-3, to win in a close match at the bottom of the lineup. Marco Collarelli, who had already won in doubles, clinched the decision for Mount St. Mary, however, taking down Wolves junior
Luke Bayliss (Branford, Conn.), 7-6, 7-5 at
"I anticipated this match coming down to the end and it certainly did," said WestConn Head Coach
Shawn Stillman. "Our slow start in doubles was the deciding factor and maybe some early nerves also. It was great
to get out there and begin the season and I expect that they will rebound when we play MSM again next week."
