DANBURY, Conn. - Members of the Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) from Western Connecticut State University took part in Read Across America at Stadley Rough Elementary School between during the first week in March. Representatives from football, field hockey, track & field, and men's soccer all took part in this multi-day event and took turns reading for and interacting with local students.
The SAAC representatives took turns reading to different classes throughout the days and played with the students during their STEM time. Some of the athletes got the chance to be the listeners while the Stadley Rough students took turns reading books that they had made. After the classes ended, some of the athletes stayed and sat with students during their lunch period, having conversations and interacting with them. The student-athletes welcomed the chance to field questions asked by the young students.
This was a memorable experience for both the students and SAAC representatives. Wolves cross country and track and field graduate Nick Howlett shared his appreciation for the event, "It was a fantastic experience for the student athletes to go out into the community and give back to some of the kids who come to support us at every home game. I remember as a kid when college athletes came to read to my classes, it made my day. I just hope we were able to make these kids' days too!"
