Box Score PURCHASE, N.Y. - Senior
Nick Lepere (Beacon, N.Y.) went 3-for-5 and had a run batted in, but the Western Connecticut State University baseball team fell victim to a valiant comeback by Manhattanville College before dropping a 10-8 decision on a drizzly Wednesday afternoon.
The Wolves pounded out 13 hits, including two hits each from
Nicholas Moeller (Mahopac, N.Y.),
Christopher Ehlers (Norwalk, Conn.) and
Peter Coniglio (New Milford, Conn.), and led 7-5 going into the bottom half of the eighth inning.
The Valiants, now 9-10, scored five runs in their last at bats then held on for the victory after allowing a run by the visitors in the top of the ninth inning.
Reliever Myles Durney induced Coniglio to hit into a 1-2-3 double play leaving
Stanley Roman (Danbury, Conn.) and
Zachary Royka (Naugatuck, Conn.) on second and third base, respectively for WestConn.
Tommy Iazzetta was summoned from the Manhattanville bullpen. Â
Lepere belted an RBI single to right field, scoring Royka, but Iazzetta closed out the comeback attempt when
Jesse Dunn (Bedford, N.Y.) popped up to sophomore shortstop Gabe Astrologo for the final out.
Durney was credited with the win and is now 1-0 for the winners. Iazzetta picked up his second save of the season.
Sam Capetanakis (Easton, Conn.) suffered the loss for WestConn and is now 0-3 for the Wolves. He allowed four runs, none of them earned, on three hits and struck out one after coming on in relief of starter
Zach Kugler (Newtown, Conn.).
Kugler allowed five runs, four of them earned, on seven hits, struck out three and walked two.
Brian Bornkamp, Tyler Mandel and Marco Clara each had two hits and two runs batted in for the Valiants, which are now 9-10 overall.
WestConn, which falls to 3-19 on the season, travels to University of Southern Maine on Saturday, April 8 for a 12 noon doubleheader with the Huskies.
