Jesse Dunn (Bedford, N.Y.),
Nicholas Moeller (Mahopac, N.Y.) and Loomis Hunter (Glastonbury, Conn.) each collected three hits, including a double each, as the Western Connecticut State University baseball team belted 16 hits in Saturday's 14-7 opener at Plymouth State University.
After scoring three runs and taking a 7-6 lead in the top of the ninth inning, the Panthers came back to scored one run in ninth and 10th innings to salvage a split with the Wolves, 8-7.
In the noon affair, Dunn and Loomis each drove in a pair of runs, but
Cameron Bogli (Vernon, Conn.) and
Christopher Ehlers (Norwalk, Conn.) drove in four and three runs, respectively for the winners.
Dunn finished with six total bases after tallying a single, double and triple.
Ehlers and Bogli collected RBI in what proved to be the decisive top of the seventh inning.
Tyler Olmo (Ardsley, N.Y.) worked three inning of relief and picked up the win on the bump for WestConn. He allowed one run on four hits and struck out one after coming on in the sixth frame.
Trailing 6-3 in the top of the ninth inning in the nightcap, Ehler lofted a sacrifice fly to plate
Jake Montas (Ellington, Conn.), who singled with one out.
Zachary Royka (Naugatuck, Conn.) then drilled a two-run single to give the visitors a 7-6 advantage.
The Panthers, now 7-13 overall and 1-6 in the league, knotted the game at 7-7 in the bottom half of the ninth when Danny Quinn singled up the middle to push Griffin Crane across.
The 10th inning would provide plenty of excitement at the sun was long past the horizon.
After eventually loading the bases with a three walks, one of them intentionally, Bryan McGrath delivered a long fly-ball single to the left field fence. He was swarmed between first and second base after driving Alex Rives in from third base.
Despite not immediately touching first base without assistance from his teammates, McGrath's game-winning hit stood and the twin bill ended as an adventurous split.
Sam Capetanakis (Easton, Conn.) was saddled with the loss after coming on to try and close out the 10th inning. He falls to 0-4 on the season.
Tyler Hicks was credited with the win and is now 1-2 on the year after working the final two innings.
WestConn plays host to Rhode Island College this Tuesday, April 18. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 pm against the Anchormen.
