WestConn Women's Lacrosse Collects Multiple Academic Accolades In 2024-25

DANBURY, Conn. — Western Connecticut State University women's lacrosse juniors Natalie Mazza (Baldwin Place, N.Y.) and Madison Ratchford (Ridge, N.Y.) were each named to the 2025 CSC Division III Academic All-District At-Large Team, and both joined graduate Vicky Gracy (Bethel, Conn.) and junior Grace Smawley (Melville, N.Y.) on the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) Division III Academic Honor Roll.  Those four, along with junior Faye Jung (Centerport, N.Y.) and sophomore Kaitlyn Biase (Nesconset, N.Y.) graced the Little East Conference (LEC) 2025 Spring All-Academic Team, and ten Wiolves were on the 2024-25 Fall/Sprinf Academic Honor Rolls. WestConn, coached by Rachael Griffith (2nd Season), finished the 2025 season with a 17-2 record, its highest-ever win total, and finished second in the LEC with a 7-1 mark against conference teams.  The Wolves defeated Southern Maine, 11-10, and won at Plymouth State, 17-9, to capture their third conference title in five years and downed Merchant Marine, 15-11, in the NCAA Division III Championship First Round before falling at No. 23-ranked Rowan in the NCAA Second Round. 

The 2025 Academic All-District® Men's and Women's At-Large teams, selected by College Sports Communicators, recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances in competition and in the classroom. The CSC Academic All-America® program separately recognizes at-large honorees in four divisions — NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and NAIA.  Academic All-District® honorees were considered for advancement to the CSC Academic All-America® ballot. The IWLCA honored 1,289 student-athletes from 203 different institutions on the 2024-25 IWLCA Division III Academic Honor Roll. To be eligible for this honor, student-athletes must be a junior, senior, or graduate student and have earned a cumulative academic GPA of 3.50 or greater. 

To be selected to the LEC Winter All-Academic Team, a student-athlete must have reached sophomore academic standing and be in good standing in their sport with a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.30.  The LEC announced a total of 2,276 student-athletes competing in the conference's current 21 championship sports to the LEC Academic Honor Roll in recognition of their academic performance in the fall 2024 semester. To be named the LEC Academic Honor Roll, a student-athlete must earn a semester GPA of 3.00 or better and have been an active member of the team at the conclusion of the term.

Ratchford, a two-time All-LEC selection, led the Wolves with 72 goals (3rd in LEC, 23rd in nation), including four game-winners, and 23 assists (7th in LEC) for 95 points (3rd in LEC) while starting all 20 games in the Wolves attack this season.  She scored eight times on free-position shots, picked up 39 ground balls and a team-high 29 caused turnovers.  A graduate of Longwood High School, Ratchford has been a CSC Academic All-District, an LEC All-Academic and an LEC Academic Honor Roll member throughout her career.

Mazza, who repeats on the CSC Academic All-District Team, started every game on defense this spring, totaling 23 ground balls and 15 caused turnovers while scoring once on a free-position shot and assisting on two other goals for three points.  A graduate of Putnam Valley High School, Mazza was an All-LEC Second Team selection in 2024 and has been an LEC All-Academic and Academic Honor Roll member as an elementary education major at WestConn.
