WestConn Baseball Trio Receives CSC Academic All-District Recognition

DANBURY, Conn. — Western Connecticut State University senior Nicholas Moeller (Mahopac, N.Y.) and sophomores Bryan Birkl (Farmingdale, N.Y.) and Ryan Vallie (East Haven, Conn.) were each named to the 2025 CSC Division III Academic All-District Baseball Team.  The trio also joined senior Zachary Ruta (Preston, Conn.) and sophomores Jimmy Muthersbaugh (Bethel, Conn.) and Richard Salonia (Bronx, N.Y.) on the Little East Conference (LEC) 2025 Spring All-Academic Team and those, along with 23 other Wolves on the Little East Conference (LEC) 2024-25 Fall/Spring Academic Honor Rolls.  WestConn, coached by John Susi (26th Season), finished the 2025 campaign with a 9-26 overall record and in ninth place in the LEC with an 1-15 mark against conference teams.  

The 2024-25 Academic All-District® Baseball Teams, selected by College Sports Communicators, recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the court and in the classroom. The CSC Academic All-America® program separately recognizes honorees in four divisions — NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and NAIA.  Academic All-District® honorees advance to the CSC Academic All-America® ballot. 

To be selected to the LEC Winter All-Academic Team, a student-athlete must have reached sophomore academic standing and be in good standing in their sport with a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.30.  The LEC announced a total of 2,276 student-athletes competing in the conference's current 21 championship sports to the LEC Academic Honor Roll in recognition of their academic performance in the fall 2024 semester. To be named the LEC Academic Honor Roll, a student-athlete must earn a semester GPA of 3.00 or better and have been an active member of the team at the conclusion of the term.

Moeller batted .339 (40-118) with team-highs of 27 runs, nine doubles, 28 RBIs, and 15 walks (tied) while starting all 35 games at catcher and DH in 2025.  He also had a home run, five stolen bases in five tries and slugged .441 with a .426 on-base percentage this spring.  Moeller, an alum of Mahopac High School, was also an LEC All-Academic honoree in 2024 as a history major at WestConn.

Birkl batted .247 (23-93) with 21 runs, a double, a triple, 11 RBIs, 14 walks, and five steals in 30 games (all starts) at shortstop for the Wolves in 2025. An alum of Farmingdale High School, Birkl was also an LEC Academic Honor Roll member in 2024-25 as an athletic training major at WestConn.

Vallie, an All-LEC Second Team honoree this spring, batted .322 this season and totaled team-highs of 29 runs and seven stolen bases in 2025.  Vallie was 38 for 118 with three doubles, two triples, 15 RBIs and 10 walks and also finished the year with just seven errors in 34 games and 33 starts at 2B for the Wolves.  A graduate of East Haven High School, Vallie was also an LEC Academic Honor Roll member in 2024 as an accouting major at WestConn.
