DANBURY, Conn. - The Western Connecticut State University women's lacrosse team mounted a furious comeback to tie the game late but the visiting Plymouth State University Panthers tallied the game's final goal to narrowly defeat the Wolves, 11-10, in Little East Conference (LEC) play on a rainy afternoon at Westside Stadium. WestConn falls to 11-2 overall and 4-1 in the LEC, snapping a six-game winning streak and a 34-game winning streak in LEC regular season play. Plymouth State improves to 10-2 overall and 4-0 in the league. The Wolves will visit the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth next on Saturday, April 19 at 1 p.m.
WestConn trailed, 10-7, with 13:14 remaining in the contest when the Wolves scored three goals in a row to tie the game at 10-apiece. Junior
Madison Ratchford (Ridge, N.Y.) scored at the 10:47 mark on a free position, followed by a caused turnover, ground ball, and unassisted tally bu sophomore
Isabella Pota (East Meadow, N.Y.) moments later. The game-tying goal came with 2:18 on the clock, as Pota picked up a ground ball off a shot off the post by Ratchford and earned a free position that she converted past Panther goalie Margia Black. Black made saves against both Pota and Wolves junior
Grace Smawley () down the stretch and Elle Moshier buried the clincher on a Panther free position with nine seconds left.
Plymouth State led, 2-1, after one quarter and, 5-4, at halftime as sophomores
Morgan Brace (Brewster, N.Y.) and Pota each scored once and Smawley added two goals for WestConn in the first two periods. The Panthers scored the first two goals of the second half but WestConn answered quickly. Pota fed Ratchford on a goal with 10:48 on the clock and Ratchford assisted Smawley on her third goal of the game and her career just 21 seconds later. The teams traded goals before Plymouth State scored twice in a row to lead, 10-7.
WestConn outshot Plymouth State, 39-24, but the Panthers put three more on goal than the Wolves (17-14). Pota finished with six points on four goals and two assists and Ratchford had two goals and two assists. WestConn junior defender
Mia Negus (Rocky Point, N.Y.) collected four ground balls and two caused turnovers and Brace had a team-high six draw controls.
Molly Bresnahan (Noank, Conn.) made nine saves for the home team. Julia Donovan paced the Panther offense with five goals and an assist. Megan Gaspa had five ground balls and three caiused turnovers and Black finished with 11 stops.
