GORHAM, Maine - Senior forward
Cameron Gallon (York, Pa.) tallied 20 points to guide the Western Connecticut State University men's basketball squad to a 79-73 victory at the University of Southern Maine in a Little East Conference tilt on Saturday afternoon at Hill Gym.
Sophomore guard
C.J. Riley (Yonkers, N.Y.) joined him in double figures with 11 and a game-high four steals, while senior forward
Jourdan Belcher (Elmsford, N.Y.) added a solid effort with nine points, eight boards and three steals.
Thomas Whelan paced the Huskies with 20 points while Bryce Lausier contributed a double-double with 17 points and 10 off the glass.
The Wolves dominated the rebound column, 46-31, while also racking up 12 steals which led to 24 points off turnovers. The WestConn bench added 31 points while the Southern Maine reserves managed just six.
The visitors trailed by 13 midway through the first half when Whelan drained a shot from beyond-the-arc. However, the Wolves gradually trimmed the lead to 40-34 at the break. WestConn continued to rally in the second stanza, reeling off a 16-3 flurry to seize a 60-59 with seven minutes remaining when Gallon drilled a three-pointer off a feed from classmate forward
Malik Cole (Brooklyn, N.Y.). They extended the advantage to 71-63 when Riley buried a trifecta off yet another assist from Cole. Southern Maine fought back and answered when Brady Saunders put the finishing touches on a three-point play to make it 76-73 with under a minute to go. However, Gallon connected on a trio of free throws down the stretch to send the Wolves to the win.
With the victory, WestConn improved to 14-8 and 10-3 while the Huskies fell to 9-13 and 5-8. The Wolves have now won six straight and will look to keep rolling when they host Rhode Island College in another LEC matchup on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
