DANBURY, Conn. - Junior forward
Maximus Vigo (Canton, Mich.) tallied two goals while senior midfielder
Daniel Russo (Trumbull, Conn.) added a scoring strike and one assist to lead the Western Connecticut State University men's soccer squad to a 5-0 shutout victory in their home-opener against visiting non-conference foe Nichols College on a misty Saturday afternoon at the Westside Athletic Complex.
The Wolves drew first blood 11:01 into the game when Vigo took a pass from senior
George Cortes (Fairfield, Conn.) and connected on his first goal of the season. Just 49 seconds later, Russo launched a curling free kick from 30 yards away. A WestConn player swooped in to attempt a header but just missed as the Nichols goalie was anticipating the deflection which allowed the long ball to sneak into the back of the net, giving the Wolves an early 2-0 advantage. The hosts would tack on another pair to widen the gap to 4-0 entering halftime. Junior forward
Ian Mounts (Middletown, Conn.) knocked a header into the twine on a corner kick feed from Russo. Shortly thereafter, Sophomore backer
Enzo LaGrassa-Gillet (North Bay Village, Fla.) did the same off yet another corner kick feed from classmate
Jeffrey Norales (Bronx, N.Y.).
WestConn would cruise the rest of the way. They closed the scoring out in the 73rd minute when Vigo sank his second of the contest on a rush upfield, assisted by rookie midfielder
Nicola Acocella (Harrison, N.Y.). The Wolves finished ahead in total shots, 19-7, while also holding an edge in corners, 9-6.
With the win, WestConn improved to 1-2 overall while the Bison fell to 1-2. The Wolves will seek to even their record when they host non-league opponent Ramapo College on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
