DANBURY, Conn. - Senior midfielder
Kadin Talho (Waterbury, Conn.) gathered a rebound and fired home his third goal of the season in the 78th minute of play to guide the Western Connecticut State University men's soccer team to a 1-1 tie with visiting non-conference opponent Ramapo College on Wednesday evening at the Westside Athletic Complex.
The Wolves controlled the majority of the tempo and finished ahead in shots, 17-9. Despite their tenancious style, the hosts fell behind in the first half when fifth-year Jack Hosmer (Fanwood, NJ) gained control of a breathtaking save from WestConn junior goalkeeper
Zachary Benson (Derby, Conn.) and found the back of the open side of the net, giving the visitors a 1-0 lead in the 16th minute.
WestConn had their chances but could not manage to punch the ball across the goal line in the half. Junior midfielder
Ayoob Musanovic (South Burlington, Vt.) saw his rip bang off the crossbar in the 30th before Talho was robbed of a penalty kick attempt by Ramapo senior netminder Nikolai Matthews (West Orange, NJ). Matthews kept the Roadrunners in the game as he finished with nine saves.
Talho flew towards the cage and knocked a header destined for the twine before Matthews came up big again with a leaping stop midway thru the second half. After numerous opportunities, the Wolves were finally able to break thru when Talho canned the marker to knot it up at 1-1. Shortly thereafter, WestConn gained its second penalty kick chance of the contest. However, the blast sailed just over the crossbar. The action went back-and-forth in the waning minutes before it completed as a stalemate.
Although hardly contested, Benson accumulated three stellar stops, while Matthews fought off the barrage from the Wolves. With the tie, WestConn moved to 1-2-1 overall while the Roadrunners went to 2-1-1. The Wolves return to the field when they travel to non-league foe Lehman College on Monday at 5 p.m.
