WestConn Men's Soccer Crushes Castleton

DANBURY, Conn. - Freshman Nickolas Santana (New Haven, Conn.) scored twice to lead the Western Connecticut State University Wolves to a 5-1 victory over the visiting Vermont State University Castleton Spartans in Little East Conference (LEC) men's soccer action.  WestConn improves to 6--2-2 overall and 2-0 in the LEC while extending its unbeaten streak to six games (5-0-1).  The Spartans fall to 2-4-3 overall and 0-2 in the league with their third loss in a row and sees its winless streak increase to seven games (0-4-3).  The Wolves will visit Wesleyan next on Wednesday at 7 p.m.

WestConn jumped on Castleton early when junior forward Maximus Vigo (Canton, Mich.) scored on a penalty kick 5:10 into the game.  Wolves senior goalie Zachary Benson (Derby, Conn.) and Spartan freshman Xander Berthiaume (Colchester, Vt.) each made three saves over the next 36 minutes, before rookie Nicola Acocella (Harrison, N.Y.) gave WestConn a 2-0 lead on a header off a corner kick by sophomore Aidan Roxo (Danbury, Conn.) with just under three minutes left in the first half.

Santana netted his first career marker 2:22 into the second frame when he stole the ball from the Spartan defense and beat Berthaiume for WestConn's third goal.  The Wolves took a 4-0 lead on Santana's second goal from sophomore Jeffrey Norales (Bronx, N.Y.) in the 59th minute, and senior back George Cortes (Fairfield, Conn.) made it 5-0 when he converted on WestConn's second penalty kick of the contest.  Stanley Anderson scored a late goal for Castleton on a deep shot in the 75th minute.  WestConn outshot Castleton, 29-14, and Benson finished with six of his team's eight saves among three goalkeepers.  Berthiaume had sx stops and J.P. Maul added four saves for the Spartans.
