WestConn Football Downs Fitchburg State Easily

Box Score DANBURY, Conn. - Senior Kamryn Holmes (Branford, Conn.) rushed for 147 yards and classmate John Giller (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) threw four touchdown passes to lead the Western Connecticut State University Wolves to a 72-0 win over the visiting Fitchburg State College Falcons in Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference (MASCAC) football action this evening at Westside Stadium.  WestConn improves to 3-1 overall and 3-0 in the MASCAC with its home-opening victory on Family Weekend.  Fitchburg State drops to 1-3 overall and 0-3 in the league with their setback in a row.  The Wolves will go for their fourth win in a row next Saturday at conference rival Plymouth State at noon.

WestConn outgained Fitchburg 589 to 198 and averaged nearly 10 yards per rushing attempt.  The Wolves defense had five sacks, forced two turnovers, and held the Falcons to one third-down conversion in 13 tries.  WestConn rushed for 302 yards, as Holmes gained his 147 yards on just 10 carries, while graduate student Kevin Franceschini (Yonkers, N.Y.) had 61 rushing yards and junior RB Tyler Rouse (Lynbrook, N.Y.) added 51 yards on the ground.  Giller, fellow senior QB Keion Jones (Mount Vernon, N.Y.), and sophomore QB Dylan Jackson (Monroe, Conn.) combined to complete 16 passes in 21 attempts and Giller was 7-for-7 for 158 yards and added a rushing touchdown to his four scoring tosses.  Oriowokite Fatoke rushed for 94 yards and Rocky Marchitelli threw for 70 yards for the Falcons.

Giller threw touchdown passes of 47 yards to sophomore Dae'Shawn Allen (White Plains, N.Y.), 22 yards to sophomore Markus Faucett (Bronx, N.Y.) for 22 yards, both eight and 40 yards to senior WR Julian Ferguson (Enfield, Conn.).  Allen finishes with four catches for 91 yards and Ferguson caught four balls for 68 yards.  WestConn senior WR Zach Soriano (Stratford, Conn.) scored the game's first touchdown with 11:57 left in the first quarter on a 33-yard strike from Jones.  Peter Norton paced the Falcon receivers with seven catches for 59 yards.  Jackson connected with senior Jaicob Tejeda (Valley Stream, N.Y.) for a 15-yard touchdown pass, while senior Kevon Patrick (Brooklyn, N.Y.) ran for a 14-yard score and Rouse added a 13-yard touchdown run.  WestConn senior K Anthony Weidtman (Nesconset, N.Y.) made eight PATs and a 26-yard field goal.

Defensively, sophomore LB Eamon Moran (Stratford, Conn.) had six tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, and a sack.  Senior Christian Scarlata (Oceanside, N.Y.) had 2.5 tackles for loss, two sacks, and a forced fumble and junior DB Mike DeFelice (New Windsor, N.Y.) had an interception.  Ryan Van Dyke (Thomaston, Conn.) and Orlando Carthens (Highland Mills, N.Y.) both blocked Falcon punts and Van Dyke also had three tackles.  lElijah McKnight and Justin Ortega notched five tackles apiece and Andrew Novak picked off a pass for Fitchburg State.  WestConn's 72 points was a new school record, breaking the previous record of 70 set in 2013 against Fitchburg State and its margin of victory broke a mark of 67 previously set in 2003 versus William Pateron (67-0).  WestConn also tied a school mark with 10 touchdowns.
