BRONX, N.Y. - Junior forward
Kamal Sabar (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and rookie midfielder
Nicholas Tellez (Port Chester, N.Y.) each found the back of the net to lead the Western Connecticut State University men's soccer team to a victory on the road at Lehman College, 2-1, in a non-conference battle on Monday night at South Field.
With the win, the Wolves improved to 2-2-1 overall while the Lightning fell to 1-4.Â
The visitors seized control in the opening half as they outshot the hosts, 9-4, while also holding the edge in corner kick chances, 4-0. Sabar broke the ice 10:03 into the contest with an unassisted tally for his first goal of the campaign.Â
The Lighting started to come to life in the second half, finishing ahead in shots, 4-3. However, Tellez took a feed from junior forward
Maximus Vigo (Canton, Mich.) and blasted home his first goal of the season, giving the Wolves a 2-0 lead eight minutes remaining. But Lehman didn't quit there. They quickly countered with a marker less than three minutes later when Ian Lanter tickled the twine, slicing it to a 2-1 advantage. But the Wolves stood strong and would not allow a shot the rest of the way en route to the victory.
WestConn senior goalkeeper
Zachary Benson (Milford, Conn.) earned the win and recorded a save, while Lehman netminder Andres Barajas took the loss and finished with six stops.
The Wolves return to action for another non-league matchup at Western New England University on Wednesday at 4 p.m. before opening Little East Conference play at Keene State on Saturday at 1 p.m.
