POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - Despite a goal from graduate student
Zachary Tuccitto (Clinton, Conn.), the Western Connecticut State University men's soccer squad fell at non-conference opponent Vassar College, 5-1, in the season opener for both teams on Friday evening at Gordon Field.
Rookie Arden Tobolski paced the Brewers with a hat trick, while senior captain Duncan Keker chipped in with five points.
Vassar broke the ice when Tobolski canned the opening marker off a nifty pass from Keker less than seven minutes into the contest. Shortly thereafter, WestConn retaliated when Tuccitto scurried thru the box and ripped a shot just inside the post, deadlocking the count at 1-1.
However, the Brewers seized control of the game from that point. Keker and Tobolski hooked up once again to extend the Vassar advantage to 3-1 at the break. In the second half, Keker converted a penalty kick before Tobolski intercepted a pass and completed the hat trick in the 73rd minute, rounding the count out at 5-1.
With the loss, the Wolves dropped to 0-1 overall, while the hosts improved to 1-0. WestConn gets a few days to regroup and will look to pierce the win column when they travel to non-league foe Drew University on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
