DANBURY, Conn. - After dropping the opener, 12-0, the Western Connecticut State University baseball team rebounded to edge visiting Little East Conference foe Southern Maine, 4-3, in the second contest on Friday afternoon at Westside Field. Senior starting pitcher
Connor Gannon (New Milford, Conn.) tossed a complete game gem while striking out nine to earn the win, while rookie
Thomas Keough (Farmington, Conn.) ripped the game-winning hit over the center fielder's head with the bases juiced in the bottom of the ninth inning to propel the hosts to the thrilling win.
The Huskies controlled the opener en route to their 17th win of the season. However, the second contest was a different story.
Keough ripped a single up the middle to get things started in Game Two and give the Wolves a 1-0 lead. The Huskies knotted the count at 1-1 in the top of the fourth courtesy of a fielder's choice RBI. The hosts regained the lead in the fourth when rookie
Bryan Birkl (Farmingdale, N.Y.) singled to right center, pushing Keough across the plate, Moments later, classmate
Jayson Hannah (Staten Island, N.Y.) smacked a single up the middle to make it a 3-1 affair.
With runners at the corners in the seventh, the Huskies attempted a steal of second base. Upon the throw and subsequent rundown, the runner at third made his way across the plate, shrinking the margin to 3-2.Â
After some spectacular infield stops from the hosts, the Huskies managed to garner a runner at first base due to a groundout error in the top of the ninth. The ensuing Southern Maine batter roped a double down the left field line to deadlock the count at 3-3 heading into the bottom of the ninth.  But the Wolves loaded the bases in the bottom half courtesy of a hit from rookie
Bryan Birkl (Farmingdale, N.Y.) and a fielding error. Junior
Nicholas Moeller (Mahopac, N.Y.) was then intentionally walked to load the bases. That is when Keough stepped to the plate and launched a drive over the outfielder's head to the left center wall giving WestConn the dramatic win and sending the crowd into a frenzy
The Wolves return to action tomorrow when they host Albertus Magnus in yet another twin bill.
