DANBURY, Conn. - Junior Nick Moeller (Mahopac, N.Y.) had a single and a double, his 100th career hit, and an RBI to lead the Western Connecticut State University Wolves to an 8-2 victory over the visiting Albertus Magnus College Falcons in the second game of today's season-ending baseball doubleheader (2 7s) for both teams this afternoon on Westside Field. WestConn, which lost the opener, 5-0, finishes the year with a 7-26 record, while the Falcons end up at 12-23. Six pitcher combined on a four-hitter in the nightcap including senior starter
Zach Schilling (West Islip, N.Y.) who struck out two batters with the bases loaded in his scoreless inning and junior
Kenneth Firlings (Middletown, R.I.) who tossed two scoreless frames at the end.
The second game was tied, 1-1, early, as Moeller drove in a run in the first inning and King Rivera answered for Albertus Magnus with junior
Charles Mulhall (Fairfield, Conn.) on second base to start the frame. Senior DH
Connor Gannon (New Milford, Conn.) singled and then Mulhall sprinted home to score the go-ahead run on a wild pitch. Senior C
Pietro Baia (Bethel, Conn.) doubled in a run, junior SS
Anthony Piazza (Lynbrook, N.Y.) singled in another, and senior 3B
Stanley Roman (Danbury, Conn.) finished off the scoring in the second with a two-out, two run double to make the score, 7-1.
Gannon singled again in the third and came around to score on another Piazza single and the only other run scored the rest of the way was unearned by the Falcons in the sixth. Moeller doubled over the left fielder's head for his fourth hit of the doubleheader and his 100th career hit on his last at-bat of the year. Freshman righty
Jimmy Muthersbaugh (Bethel, Conn.) earned his first college win, improving to 1-2, and Tyler Baldwin took the loss for Albertus Magnus. Falcon reliever Riley Corgan threw well, allowing one run in 3.2 innings with 3 K's.
Albertus Magnus freshman LHP Albert Molina tossed a five-hitter with no walks and two strikeouts in the first game, outdueling WestConn senior RHP
Sam Capetanakis (Easton, Conn.) who allowed two earned runs and seven hits with two walks and two K's over his seven innings but fell to 1-5. Moeller had two hits in game one, while Ariel Espada and Jason Sullivan both had a single and double for the visitors. Albertus had swept the Wolves in a doubleheader last month, so WestConn's game two victory salvaged the four games this spring against Albertus Magnus. WestConn finished the season with wins in three of their last five games over the last four days.
