WILLIMANTIC, Conn. - The Western Connecticut State University baseball team dropped both games of a doubleheader to UMass Dartmouth on Sunday afternoon. The games were played at Eastern Connecticut due to poor field conditions from heavy rains earlier in the week. The Wolves fell in Game One, 13-1, before being downed in Game Two, 15-3.
It was all Corsairs in the opener. WestConn was held hitless thru the seven inning contest. They managed to sneak a run across the plate when senior
Jesse Dunn (Bedford, N.Y.) scored on a wild pitch after reaching base when he was hit by a pitch. UMass Dartmouth erupted with a six-run second inning to take command of the contest. They would coast the rest of the way.
It was a similar story in the second game of the afternoon. The Corsairs tallied a pair of runs in the top of the first before the Wolves answered with a run in the bottom half of the frame. After being hit by a pitch, senior infielder
Stanley Roman (Danbury, Conn.) scored from third on a passed ball. Junior
Nicholas Moeller (Mahopac, N.Y.) moved him to third when he ripped a double just moments earlier. The Corsairs put up another six runs in the second frame for the second time to widen the lead to 8-1. WestConn was able to add a pair of runs in the fifth. Rookie infielder
Ryan Vallie (East Haven, Conn.) drew a walk and later came around to score when classmate
Jayson Hannah (Staten Island, N.Y.) smacked an RBI single. Shortly thereafter, Hannah would steal third before touching the plate courtesy of a sacrifice fly to left from Moeller. But UMass Dartmouth tacked on three runs in the sixth and four in the seventh to seal the win.
With the pair of losses, WestConn dropped to 3-14 overall and 0-6 in league play, while the Corsairs improved to 11-12. The Wolves return to action when they travel to LEC foe Rhode Island College on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.
