PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The visiting Western Connecticut State University Wolves jumped out to a 3-0 lead but allowed eight runs in the fifth inning, losing, 10-3, against the Rhode Island College Anchormen in Little East Conference (LEC) baseball action this afternoon at Pontarelli field. WestConn falls to 3-15 overall and 0-7 in the Little East with its sixth loss in five days, while Rhode Island College improves to 10-9 overall and 2-5 in the league. Bryan Birkl (Farmingdale, N.Y.) were both 2-for-3 at the plate for WestConn.
Roman doubled with two outs in the top of the first inning and scored the first run of the game on an RBI single by junior
Spencer Barnett (Danbury, Conn.). The Wolves added two more runs in the fifth frame with a two-out rally on consecutive base hits by Birkl and freshman
Jayson Hannah (Staten Island, N.Y.) and a two-run double to left-center by senior
Jesse Dunn (Bedford, N.Y.). The Anchormen erupted for eight runs in the bottom of the fifth, including three on a home run by Sean Helfrich. WestConn junior starter
Max Grewal (Long Beach, N.Y.) had not allowed a hit through the first four innings, but was saddled with the loss and falls to 1-3. Jake Randall earned the win in relief for Rhode Island College, as the Wolves were hitless over the last four innings.
