WEST HARTFORD, Conn. - The Western Connecticut State University Wolves were beaten, 11-4, and, 6-2, in a pair of Little East Conference (LEC) baseball games against the Keene State College Owls this afternoon on a neutral site at the University of Saint Joseph. WestConn falls to 3-12 overall and 0-4 in the conference with another league doubleheader tomorrow at noon against the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth Corsairs which the Wolves will play as the home team on Eastern Connecticut State University's field in Willimantic. Keene State improves to 11-12 overall and 3-1 in the league. WestConn senior
Stanley Roman (Danbury, Conn.) had five hits, a run, and two RBIs in the two games.
WestConn started strong, taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning on a leadoff walk by senior
Jesse Dunn (Bedford, N.Y.), two ground balls, and a two-out, RBI single by Roman. Dunn scored again in the third inning on an error after leading off with a single. Sophomore Paul Coniglio (New Milford, Conn.) followed with a single and gave WestConn a 3-0 lead thanks to another run-scoring hit by Roman. Keene State scored its first run in the third inning, as Wolves starter
Connor Gannon (New Milford, Conn.) allowed just three hits over the first four frames, but the Owls took the lead with three runs in the fifth. Gannon retired the Owls in order in the sixth and seventh frames, but a seven-run eighth inning for Keene State put the game out of reach. Coniglio walked and scored on a groundout by rookie
Thomas Keough (Farmington, Conn.) in the top of the ninth but the game ended on a strikeout one batter later. Gannon struck out eight and did not walk a batter but allowed 11 hits and eight runs in eight innings to drop to 1-3.
In game two, Keene State led, 4-0, after three innings before a two-run single by freshman
Luke Dawson (Stratford, Conn.) cut the Wolves deficit in half in the fourth. The score remained the same through seven innings, as WestConn sophomore Zach Barry (Fairfield, Conn.) and Owls' reliever Troy Brennan both pitched scoreless frames in the fifth, sixth, and seventh. Keene State added a pair of insurance runs in the eighth, while the WestConn offense remained silent the rest of the way. Barry scattered eight hits and struck out seven without a walk in seven innings but dropped to 1-2 with the hard-luck loss. Brennan picked up his first win in relief and Evan Cali had two hits in each game for the Owls.
