DANBURY, Conn. - Senior midfielder
Vicky Gracy (Bethel, Conn.) and rookie attacker
Isabella Pota (East Meadow, N.Y.) each netted a pair of goals but the Western Connecticut State University women's lacrosse team fell victim to a late run en route to an 11-7 loss to visiting Westfield State University in a non-conference affair during treacherous conditions at the Westside Athletic Complex on a soggy Wednesday night.
Senior midfielder Megan Bailey (Quincy, Mass.) led the Owls with a game-high four goals, while sophomore attacker Arianna Andresen (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) dished out a game-high four assists. Senior Natalie DeMaio (Westwood, Mass.) and sophomore Mykenzie Black (Hopedale, Mass.) each produced hat tricks.
Gracy ignited the scoring with her 20th marker of the season less than four minutes into the contest. Westfield State countered with four of the next five goals to wrap up the opening quarter with a 4-2 advantage. Bailey capped the spurt with a free-position tally for her second goal of the game.
Each squad put up three scoring strikes in the second quarter. Pota tallied her 20th goal of the campaign with 2:19 left before haltime to slice the gap to 7-5 at the break. Graduate student attacker
Alexa Riggio (North Massapequa, N.Y.) fired home her 22nd goal of the slate, trimming the deficit to 7-6 early in the third. However, the Owls struck back with four straight goals to escape the heavy rain and wind while notching the victory.
WestConn senior netminder
Molly Bresnahan (Groton, Conn.) took the loss and stopped eight shots, while Westfield State senior goalie Kara Banagan (Niskayuna, N.Y.) earned the win while racking up nine saves.
With the loss, the Wolves dropped to 5-5 overall while the Owls improved to 6-4. WestConn returns to the field when they host the University of Southern Maine in a Little East Conference matchup scheduled for Saturday at 1 p.m.
