Pota Racks Up Eight Points as Women's Lacrosse Storms Past Southern Maine

DANBURY, Conn. - Rookie attacker Isabella Pota (East Meadow, N.Y.) tallied a game-high eight points on five goals and three assists to lead the Western Connecticut State University women's lacrosse team to a 19-6 victory over the University of Southern Maine in a Little East Conference contest on Saturday afternoon at the Westside Athletic Complex.

Graduate student attacker Alexa Riggio (North Massapequa, N.Y.) added four goals and one assist, while sophomore midfielder Faye Junge (Centerport, N.Y.) notched a hat trick and two helpers for the Wolves. Senior midfielder Vicky Gracy (Bethel, Conn.) chipped in with a trio of scoring strikes and one assist, while sophomore attacker Madison Ratchford (Ridge, N.Y.) added a goal and three assists.

Junior midfielder Julia McKenna (Windham, ME) paced the visiting Huskies with a hat trick and one assist.

WestConn controlled play, outshooting Southern Maine, 41-22. The Wolves also won the groundball battle, 26-16, while finishing ahead in draw controls, 15-9.

With the game knotted at 1-1 early in the first quarter, the hosts reeled off seven straight goals to seize command. Pota sparked the barrage with her 21st goal of the campaign before Riggio wrapped up the run with her team-leading 25th marker of the season to make it 8-1 early in the second.

The Wolves would eventually widen the gap to a 10-goal advantage and earn running time late in the third. Sophomore Natalie Mazza (Putnam Valley, N.Y.) fired home her first goal of the season on a free-position attempt in the fourth before Riggio canned her 26th of the season to round the scoring out at 19-6.

WestConn senior goalie Molly Bresnhan (Groton, Conn.) was stellar in between the pipes as she made several highlight-reel worthy stops. She earned the win and finished with nine saves. Southern Maine senior netminder Cece Racine (Lewiston, ME) took the loss and turned aside 12 shots.

With the win, the Wolves improved to 6-5 overall and 2-0 in league play, while the Huskies dropped to 3-5 and 0-2. WestConn returns to action for a non-conference tilt at Worcester State on Wednesday at 5 p.m.
