DANBURY, Conn. - Senior midfielder
Vicky Gracy (Bethel, Conn.) tallied a game-high five goals while dishing out an assist to guide the Western Connecticut State University women's lacrosse team to a 19-8 victory over visiting archrival Eastern Connecticut State University on Wednesday evening at the Westside Athletic Complex.
It marked the final regular season home game for the Wolves, who improved to 11-5 overall and 6-0 in Little East Conference play. The Warriors suffered their first league loss and dropped to 8-7 and 5-1.Â
"Our girls knew what this game meant with both teams undefeated and tied for first place in the league," said WestConn Head Coach
Rachael Griffith. "We wanted to come out strong from the start and I thought we played really well and connected on both ends of the field. Our draw team came up big, and Molly had another great game in goal."
Sophomore midfielder
Faye Junge (Centerport, N.Y.) added three goals and three assists for the hosts, while rookie attacker
Isabella Pota (East Meadow, N.Y.) chipped in with a hat trick, one helper and a game-high 10 draw controls.Â
It was all Wolves wire-to-wire as they opened the contest with a 7-0 flurry. Gracy got it going with a free-position marker before rounding out the run with her 36th goal of the season. WestConn would build the advantage up to 13-4 at halftime when sophomore attacker
Madison Ratchford (Ridge, N.Y.) buried her 37th marker of the campaign.
Things didn't get any easier for the visitors in the second half. The Wolves reeled off a five-goal spurt to move ahead 19-5 early in the fourth. Gracy notched her team-leading 39th goal before Eastern wrapped up the scoring with three-straight.Â
WestConn senior goalkeeper
Molly Bresnahan (Noank, Conn.) continued to shine in between the pipes, stopping 14 shots, while Eastern senior netminder Mackenzie Brown (Southington, Conn.) recorded 10 in the loss.Â
The Wolves return to action for their regular season finale at LEC foe Rhode Island College on Saturday at Noon. The LEC Championship Tournament is slated to begin on Tuesday.Â
