DANBURY, Conn. - Junior attackman
Julian Duque (Mastic, N.Y.) tallied a game-high five goals and two assists, while rookie attackman
Cody Suhr (Holbrook, N.Y.) tickled the twine once and dished out a game-high five assists as the Western Connecticut State University men's lacrosse team cruised to a 20-6 victory over archrival Eastern Connecticut State University in a Little East Conference matchup on Wednesday evening at the Westside Athletic Complex.
Duque and Suhr - who both received LEC accolades earlier in the week - were joined by five other Wolves players with double digit point totals. Graduate student midfielder
Benjamin Hawthorne (Manorville, N.Y.) added a hat trick and two helpers, while sophomore middie
Tristan McMahon (Farmingville, N.Y.) tacked on a trio of goals and one assist.
The hosts dominated play and opened the game with a furious six-goal barrage in the opening quarter. Duque drew first blood with an unassisted marker before Suhr took a feed from Hawthorne and buried his 16th goal of the season to cap the flurry.
It didn't stop there. The Wolves would hold an 8-0 halftime lead before McMahon struck for his second goal of the contest early in the third. Eastern finally got on the board when senior Andrew Pendagast (Southbury, Conn.) connected with the twine to cut the WestConn advantage to 9-1. The Wolves widened the gap to 19-2 midway thru the fourth when Duque canned his team-leading 43rd goal of the campaign. Eastern would answer with four of the final five goals late in the game to round the count out at 20-6.
With the victory, WestConn improved to 9-4 overall and 4-1 in league play, while the Warriors dropped to 4-10 and 1-5. The Wolves will look to make it five in a row when they travel to LEC foe Salem State on Saturday at 4 p.m.
