DANBURY, Conn. - Graduate student attacker
Alexa Riggio (North Massapequa, N.Y.) tallied a game-high eight points on five goals and three assists as the Western Connecticut State University women's lacrosse team raced past the University of Hartford, 19-11, on a wet Wednesday afternoon at the Westside Athletic Complex.
Sophomore midfielder
Faye Junge (Centerport, N.Y.) added four scoring strikes while senior midfielder
Vicky Gracy (Bethel, Conn.) contributed a hat trick and two assists for the Wolves.
Madison Olmstead led the Hawks with four goals and one helper, while Katie Graham and Meghan Smith chipped in with two goals apiece.
The hosts finished ahead in total shots, 42-29, while forcing 13 Hartford turnovers. The Wolves coughed the ball up just nine times. The winners edged the visitors in draw controls, 18-16. After notching Little East Conference Rookie of the Week honors for the second consecutive week, WestConn rookie
Isabella Pota (East Meadow, N.Y) racked up seven of draw wins.
The Wolves shot out of the gate with a 9-1 run. Gracy drew first blood exactly one minute into the first quarter with an unassisted marker. Junge and Riggio each netted a pair during the flurry before Gracy sealed it off a sweet pass from Riggio early in the second stanza.
Hartford didn't go down without a fight. Olmstead connected with the twine with a player advantage with one second left on the clock before halftime. Shortly thereafter, she found the back of the net in the third - again powerplay style - shrinking the gap to 13-6. However, the visitors were unable to close the margin further. Riggio hit senior attacker
Colleen Crotty (Peabody, Mass.) who tickled the twine and rounded the count out at 19-11.
Senior
Molly Bresnahan (Groton, Conn.) - who also earned her second straight LEC Goalie of the Week honors this week - finished with seven saves to earn the victory. Hanna Ramsey turned aside 10 shots for the Hawks and took the loss.
With the win, WestConn improved to 3-1 overall while Hartford dropped to 0-3. The Wolves will seek to extend their win streak to four games when they travel to non-league foe Marymount University on Monday at 4 p.m.
