ARLINGTON, Va. - Sophomore
Madison Ratchford (Ridge, N.Y.) had four goals and two assists to lead the visiting Western Connecticut State University Wolves to a 13-11 victory over the Marymount University Saints in women's lacrosse action this afternoon at Long Bridge Park. WestConn wins its fourth game in a row to improve to 4-1, while the Saints fall to 2-2. The Wolves will visit Hood next on Wednesday at 3 p.m.
WestConn never trailed against the Saints, beginning with a player-up goal by grad student
Alexa Riggio (North Massapequa, N.Y.) just 44 seconds into the contest. Ratchford assisted Riggio on the opening goal and added her first marker of the game 1:06 later. Marymount fought back and tied the score at 3-3 on a goal by Tess Valentino midway through the first quarter, but Wolves rookie
Isabella Pota (East Meadow, N.Y.) put the visitors ahead for good with a goal from Riggio while the Saints were fighting off another yellow card. Riggio scored twice more, including once again from Ratchford, to give WestConn a 6-4 lead at halftime.
WestConn used a 5-1 run in the third frame to take control, as Ratchford and sophomore
Faye Junge (Centerport, N.Y.) scored twice each and senior midfielder Victoria Gracy (Bethel, Conn.) added a goal to make the score, 12-7, at the final break. Marymount outscored the Wolves, 4-1, in the fourth quarter but WestConn won the game's final draw with 1:45 on the clock and did not allow a shot the rest of the way. Riggio finished with four goals and one assist, while Junge had a hat trick, Pota notched a goal, two assists, and five draw controls, and Gracy added a goal and one assist. Senior
Molly Bresnahan (Noank, Conn.) made six saves and scooped four ground balls. Ella Baker made 12 stops and Ella Baker scored three times for the Saints.
