PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Down a player on the field due to a penalty, sophomore midfielder
Faye Junge (Centerport, N.Y.) found the back of the net in overtime to lift the Western Connecticut State University women's lacrosse squad to a thrilling 11-10 victory at Plymouth State University in the Little East Conference opener for both teams on Saturday afternoon.
Graduate student attacker
Alexa Riggio (North Massapequa, N.Y.) paced the Wolves with three goals and one assist while rookie
Isabella Pota (East Meadow, N.Y.) added a hat trick.
Julia Donovan led the Panthers with a trio of scoring strikes and one helper while Megan Gaspa added two goals and one assist.
The score was close the entire contest as neither team led by more than a pair of tallies. Junge started and ended the scoring for the visitors. She drew first blood when she tickled the twine less than three minutes into the first quarter. The teams trade blows before senior attacker
Colleen Crotty (Peabody, Mass.) gave WestConn a 4-3 lead with her fifth marker of the season on a player-advantage to conclude the opening stanza.
In the second, the Wolves put together a three-goal spurt. Riggio connected with the back of the net twice before feeding Pota for another tally, giving them a 7-5 halftime advantage. The hosts battled back to even the count at 8-8 when Maddie Hunt scored late in the third quarter. But Riggio quickly countered with her 21st goal of the campaign to help WestConn regain a slim 9-8 lead heading into the fourth.
The Panthers knotted the count once again before Pota canned her 18th of the season to make it 10-9 with 7:22 left in regulation. The hosts netted the equalizer when Amelia Thomas scored unassisted with 2:28 remaining on the clock to force the extra session. After starting overtime down a player due to a yellow card, Pota won the opening draw and Junge hit the twine as the Wolves escaped with the win.
Senior goalkeeper
Molly Bresnahan (Groton, Conn.) racked up nine saves for the visitors to earn the win. Margie Black took the tough luck loss and turned aside 12 shots for the Panthers. WestConn snapped a three-game skid, improving to 5-4 overall and 1-0 in LEC play, while Plymouth dropped to 3-5 and 0-1. The Wolves return to action when they host Westfield State for a non-league tilt on Wednesday at 6 p.m.
