NEW LONDON, Conn. - Graduate student attacker
Alexa Riggio (North Massapequa, N.Y.) poured in a team-high three goals but the Western Connecticut State University women's lacrosse team was downed at cross-state opponent Connecticut College, 15-8, in a non-conference matchup on Wednesday evening.
Senior
Katelyn Contreras (Danbury, Conn.) and sophomore
Madison Ratchford (Ridge, N.Y.) chipped in with one goal and one assist apiece for the Wolves.
Sophomore attacker Campbell Johnston (Duxbury, Mass.) led the Camels with a game-high seven points on five goals and two helpers, while junior attacker Caroline Bruce (Acton, Mass.) contributed four goals and one assist.Â
The hosts held the edge in shots, 37-24, while also converting a trio of free-position attempts.Â
Johnston got things started for Conn. College when she found the back of the net less than two minutes into the contest, unassisted. The hosts added another strike before Contreras got WestConn on the board courtesy of a dish from rookie
Samantha Paredes (Brentwood, N.Y.). Riggio netted her first goal of the game near the conclusion of the first quarter, cutting the Camels' advantage to 4-3.Â
However, the hosts reeled off five goals in the second stanza and another pair to begin the third to seize control of the game and widen the gap to 11-3. The Wolves countered with three of the next four goals but it was to little too late as Conn. College was able to cruise the rest of the way.
WestConn senior netminder
Molly Bresnahan (Noank, Conn.) took the loss and recorded 10 saves, while senior goalie Violette Nidds (Ridgewood, N.J) earned the win for the Camels while stopping eight shots.
With the loss, the Wolves dropped to 4-4 overall while Conn. College improved to 5-3. WestConn returns to action for its Little East Conference opener when they travel to Plymouth State University on Saturday at Noon.
