NEW LONDON, Conn. - Junior midfielder
Peter Traina (East Moriches, N.Y.) tallied a team-high three points on a goal and two assists but the Western Connecticut State University men's lacrosse squad suffered a 14-8 loss at non-league cross-state opponent Connecticut College on Tuesday night at Silfen Field.
Graduate student
Tyler Starrett (Redding, Conn.) and junior
Matt Sweeney (Rocky Point, N.Y.) produced two goals apiece from the midfield for the Wolves, while graduate student faceoff specialist
Jonathan Russack-Baker (Groton, Conn.) notched 15-of-24 wins to go along with a game-high 10 groundballs.
Sophomore attackman Liam Horkan (Malden, Mass.) paced the Camels with a game-high six goals, while junior attackman JJ Ford (Clinton, Conn.) chipped in with a pair of scoring strikes and one helper.
The hosts finished ahead in total shots, 50-30, while amassing 34 scoops off the ground compared to the visitor's 24. The Wolves also ran into a tough ride from the Camels as they converted just 17-of-26 clear attempts.
The Wolves got off to a sluggish start as Conn. College jumped out to a 4-1 lead to wrap up the opening quarter. Horkan completed a hat trick during the spurt. WestConn sliced the deficit to 6-4 in the second stanza. Sweeney dodged and put the finishing touches on an unassisted marker just before halftime to complete the counter.
However, the Camels responded with four-straight goals to begin the third quarter. Horkan began the flurry when he took a feed and found the back of the net on the only man-up opportunity of the game for both teams. Shortly thereafter, he converted yet another twine tickler to round out the run, extending the Conn. College lead to 10-4. WestConn could not recover from the barrage.
With the loss, the Wolves fell to 5-4 overall, while the Camels improved to 2-4, after dropping decisions to three opponents ranked in the Top 20 nationally. WestConn will look to get back to its winning ways when they matchup against Little East Conference foe Vermont State Castleton University at the Westside Athletic Complex on Saturday at 1 p.m.
