DANBURY, Conn. - Graduate student midfielder
Tyler Starrett (Redding, Conn.) tallied four goals, while sophomore middie
Tristan McMahon (Farmingville, N.Y.) added a hat trick and one assist to guide the Western Connecticut State University men's lacrosse team to a 17-5 Little East Conference win over visiting Vermont State University Castleton on a breezy and bright Saturday afternoon at the Westside Athletic Complex.
Graduate student
Benjamin Hawthorne (Manorville, N.Y.), senior
Joseph Boss (Holbrook, N.Y.) and junior
Julian Duque (Mastic, N.Y.) each added a pair of goals for the Wolves.Â
Senior midfielder Cam Frankenhoff (Essex Junction, Vt.) led the Spartans with two scoring strikes, while three other players also found the back of the net for the visitors.
WestConn outshot Castleton by a whopping 81-24 margin in a contest that featured seven different goalkeepers. Senior
Brendan Grove (Cheshire, Conn.) earned the win in between the pipes for the Wolves, finishing with six saves. Junior netminder Zac Smith (Arlington, Mass.) took the loss for the Spartans and recorded 13 stops.
WestConn opened the game with a 4-0 advantage and would not look back. Boss got things started with his fifth marker of the season less than one minute into play before McMahon tallied his first goal of the contest to round out the spurt. Frankenhoff cut it to 4-1 with a man-up tally but the hosts answered with a 6-0 flurry. Starrett completed the hat trick before Boss canned his second goal, giving WestConn a 9-1 halftime lead.
The story wouldn't change much in the second half. Duque netted his team-leading 30th goal of the campaign midway thru the third quarter. In the fourth, junior
Jack Murphy (Putnam Valley, N.Y.), rookies
Andrew Aronow (Holbrook, N.Y.) and
Quentin Connolly (Cranford, N.J.) each netted their respective first goals of the slate for the Wolves.Â
With the win, WestConn snapped a two-game skid, improving to 6-4 overall and 1-1 in LEC play, while Castleton sank to 1-8 and 0-2. The Wolves get a break before returning to action for yet another league tilt when they travel to UMass Boston on April 9.
