BOSTON, Mass. - The visiting Western Connecticut State University Wolves dropped both games of their Little East Conference (LEC) opening baseball doubleheader against the University of Massachusetts-Boston Beacons this afternoon at Monan Park. WestConn, which lost the first game, 8-3, and the second, 7-2, drops to 2-9, while the Beacons improve to 6-7. The Wolves return to action on Tuesday with a road tilt against Lehman at 4 p.m.
Senior RHP
Connor Gannon (New Milford, Conn.) went seven innings and struck out six but dropped to 1-2, while Peter Conigio (New Milford, Conn.) was 2-for-3 at the plate with two RBIS for the Wolves in game one. Coniglio's two-out, two-run single gave WestConn a 2-0 lead in the second inning of the opener, and freshman
Jayson Hannah (Staten Island, N.Y.) recorded his second hit and second run of the game to give the visitors a 3-1 lead in the fourth frame. The Beacons took the lead with three runs in the fifth, going ahead, 4-3, on a run-scoring single by Brandon Gaer. The score remained the same until the eighth inning when UMass-Boston broke the game open with four more runs.
Trailing, 1-0, WestConn tied the second game when Coniglio singled and scored on a base knock by junior OF
Spencer Barnett (Danbury, Conn.). The Beacons answered with two runs in the fourth, fifth, and sixth frames. Hannah walked and scored on a wild pitch for the Wolves in the seventh inning, but UMass-Boston starter Max Moss was solid throughout with six hits allowed and eight K's. Sophomore hurler
Zachary Barry (Fairfield, Conn.) was saddled with the loss for WestConn, falling to 1-1.
