FORT PIERCE, Fla. - The Western Connecticut State University baseball team split a pair of games on the final day of its Spring trip on Saturday at Lawnwood Complex. The Wolves downed Washington College (Maryland), 7-3, before being edged by Gettysburg College, 11-10, to conclude the week.
In the opener against Washington, the Wolves pierced the scoring column in the bottom of the second inning when senior
Jesse Dunn (Bedford, N.Y.) drove in a pair of runners with an RBI single. Moments later, they upped the score to 3-0 when junior
Nicholas Moeller (Mahopac, N.Y.) knocked a single to push Dunn across the plate.
Washington battled to back with a run in the third and another pair in the top of the fifth, knotting the count at 3-3. However, WestConn regained the lead in the bottom half of the fifth when senior
Stanley Roman (Danbury, Conn.) scored on a throwing error from the outfield after reaching base on another Washington miscue. The Wolves added another trio of runs in the sixth. Roman drew a walk with the bases loaded before junior
Spencer Barnett (Danbury, Conn.) ripped yet another RBI single for the squad. Shortly thereafter, Moeller scored on a wild pitch to round the scoring out at 7-3. Graduate student starting pitcher
Connor Gannon (New Milford, Conn.) put together seven solid innings of work, striking out six while allowing just two earned runs to capture the win.
The second contest of the day against Gettysburg was a nailbiter. The Wolves appeared to be coasting as they jumped out to an 8-0 lead. Barnett smacked a single to push two runners across the plate to get things started in the first inning. Junior
Anthony Piazza (Lynbrook, N.Y.) then ripped another single to right, scoring Barnett to make it 4-0. Roman followed it up with an RBI single in the second before rookies
Jayson Hannah (Staten Island, N.Y.) and
Bryan Birkl (Farmingdale, N.Y.) each smashed RBI's in the third, widening the gap to 8-0.Â
However, the Bullets came to life and rallied to tie the contest at 8-8 in the sixth. The Wolves regained a 10-8 lead when Moeller singled up the middle to score Hannah and Birkl. But Gettysburg wouldn't go away. They trimmed the deficit to 10-9 in the seventh before knotting it at 10-10 in the eighth. Will Bercaw earned a walk with the bases loaded, giving Gettysburg its first lead at 11-10. WestConn put the tying run on base when Moeller reached on a fielding error in the top of the ninth. But the game ended when the ensuing batter hit a fly out to left.Â
With the split, WestConn moved to 2-7 overall. Washington went to 3-12 while Gettysburg moved to 5-10. The Wolves return to action at the University of Saint Joseph on Thursday at 3 p.m.
