FORT PIERCE, Fla. - The Western Connecticut State University Wolves were swept by the Kenyon College Owls, 8/6-2/1, and lost to the Franciscan University of Steubenville Barons, 12-8, in baseball action today at Lawnwood Sports Complex. WestConn drops to 1-6 heading into the final day of its spring trip to Florida when the Wolves will play Washington College and Gettysburg College on Saturday, March 16 at 9:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m., respectively.
Kenyon scored five runs in the third inning of game one before the Wolves scored a run in the fourth and fifth frames. Sophomore
Peter Coniglio (New Milford, Conn.) singled and senior
Stanley Roman (Danbury, Conn.) doubled, followed by an RBI groundout from junior
Spencer Barnett (Danbury, Conn.) but Roman was left stranded at third base. The Wolves scored their second run on a groundout too, as
Thomas Keough (Farmington, Conn.) and
Charles Mulhall (Fairfield, Conn.) singled before
Jesse Dunn (Bedford, N.Y.) drove in Keough with a grounder to first. Barnett doubled in the sixth but was the final WestConn baserunner, as Kenyon's Peyton Hodges struck out the side in the seventh to end the game. Freshman
Max Grewal (Long Beach, N.Y.) suffered the loss on the mound and sophomore
Kenneth Firlings (Middletown, R.I.) did not allow a run in the seventh inning.
In game two of the doubleheader, Kenyon scored an unearned run in the second inning and added three more in the fourth. Coniglio led off the sixth with a single and scored on a base knock by sophomore
Robert Garcia (Farmingville, N.Y.). The Wolves loaded the bases in the inning with one out but could not score another run the rest of the game. Freshman
Brian Mansfield (Lynbrook, N.Y.) gave WestConn a quality start, working five innings and allowing four hits and two earned runs with two strikeouts but took the loss. Rookie
Jimmy Muthersbaugh (Bethel, Conn.) pitched a scoreless sixth for the Wolves, while Coniglio and Moller both had two hits.
