DANBURY, Conn. - Sophomore attacker
Madison Ratchford (Ridge, N.Y.) erupted to notch a game-high seven goals and one assist, while senior midfielder
Vicky Gracy (Bethel, Conn.) added five scoring strikes and two helpers to lift the Western Connecticut State University women's lacrosse squad to a 19-11 victory over visiting non-league foe Smith College on a windy and soggy night at the Westside Athletic Complex on Wednesday.
Reigning Little East Conference Rookie of the Week
Isabella Pota (East Meadow, N.Y.) chipped in with a hat trick and a game-high 13 draw controls, while graduate student attacker
Alexa Riggio (North Massapequa, N.Y.) tickled the twine twice and dished out a game-high four assists.
Senior midfielder Gia Arancio (Smithtown, N.Y.) paced the Pioneers with four goals and one assist, while classmate Jennie Arancio (Smithtown, N.Y.) tacked on a pair of goals.
The hosts finished with a 38-21 advantage in shots to go along with a 23-10 edge in draw controls.
The Wolves raced out of the gate to seize an early 4-0 lead. Gracy began the flurry with her fourth goal of the campaign before wrapping it up with her fifth. They widened the gap to 7-2 heading into the second quarter.Â
Riggio connected with Pota and Ratchford, extending the lead to 12-5 before Gia Arancio tallied her sixth goal of the year just before the halftime horn to make it 12-6. The Wolves earned running time, stretching it to 19-9 when sophomore midfielder
Faye Junge (Centerport, N.Y.) found the back of the net for her first goal of the season. She would also hand out a trio of assists in the contest.Â
WestConn senior goalkeeper
Molly Bresnahan (Groton, Conn.) - who also earned LEC accolades earlier this week - finished with six saves, while Smith sophomore netminder Shannon Houtenville (East Windsor, N.J.) turned aside nine shots.
With the win, the Wolves improved to 1-1 overall, giving first-year head coach
Rachael Griffith her first win at the helm of the program. After downing LEC opponent Southern Maine earlier in the week, the Pioneers fell to 1-1. WestConn returns to action on Saturday at Noon when they travel to Farmingdale State College for a non-conference affair.
