WestConn's Bomboy Named Field Hockey Rookie And Goalkeeper Of The Year BY LEC

Four Wolves Collect Little East Post-Season Honors

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Western Connecticut State University freshman Gracie Bomboy (Bainbridge, N.Y.) was named as both Little East Conference (LEC) Field Hockey Goalkeeper of the Year and the LEC Rookie of the Year for the fall of 2024.  Bomboy also joins Wolves junior forward Reagan Schoen (Newtown, Conn.) on the LEC All-Conference First Team, WestConn senior M/D Reilly Schmidt (Centereach, N.Y.) graced the All-LEC Second Team, and sophomore defender Jayne Hughes (Trumbull, Conn.) received an LEC 12th Player Award.  WestConn, coached by Dani McDonnell (20th season), finished the 2024 campaign with a 7-13 overall record and tied with Eastern Connecticut and Southern Maine for fourth place in the Little East with a 2-4 record against league teams.  The Wolves qualified for the LEC Championship Tournament, falling at Plymouth State, 5-4, in the opening round. 

Bomboy started and appeared in 14 games this fall, including all seven game against conference foes, in the WestConn cage, totaling an LEC-best 147 saves for a .782 save percentage (1st in LEC) and allowing 41 goals for a 3.04 GAA with one shutout and a 4-10 record in 810 minutes of play.  She had five games with double-digit save totals and saved 20 or more shots three times in 2024.  Bomboy was honored as the LEC Rookie of the Week three times and its Goalkeeper of the Week four times this fall.  A graduate of Harpersville High School, Bomboy is majoring in business administration at WestConn.

Schoen started all 20 games for the Wolves this fall, leading WestConn in goals (17), assists (5), total points (39), shots (100), and game-winning goals (3). Schoen was the LEC Offensive Player of the Week once this season and her 17 goals was a new WestConn record for a single season.  She converted on her one penalty stroke of the campaign and three games with two or more goals including consecutive hat tricks in the first two games of the season.  A graduate of Newtown High School, Schoen has been a National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) National Academic Squad member and an LEC Academic Honor Roll member as a psychology major at WestConn.

Schmidt played in 19 games with 18 starts for the Wolves this fall,recording one assist and taking six shots. A graduate of Centereach High School, Schmidt has been an LEC Academic Honor Roll member as a business management major at WestConn.

Hughes played in 15 games with nine starts for the Wolves this fall, tallying one defensive save and taking two shots. The 12th Player Award is presented to a student-athlete in recognition of their positive contributions to the team both on and off the field, who brings forth their best effort in competition, practice and other team activities that positively contribute to the success of the program.  A graduate of Trumbull High School, Hughes is majoring in education at WestConn.
