DANBURY, Conn. — Three minutes into overtime,
Alyssa Montalvo (Holbrook, N.Y.) netted the game-winner off a penalty stroke to give the Western Connecticut State University field hockey team a 3-2 win over Manhattanville University at the Westside Athletic Complex on Tuesday. The Wolves improved to 2-2, while the Valiants dropped to 0-2 on the season. It was double trouble for the Wolves as both
Jaelyn Moulton (Stafford Springs, Conn.) and
Andrea Moulton (Stafford Springs, Conn.) contributed to the win with a goal each.
Twenty-five seconds into regulation Jaelyn Molton fired an unassisted tally to quickly put the Wolves up 1-0, which the home team maintained through the first half.
Three minutes into the third quarter, Keira Guinan scored her first goal of the contest off the stick of Fiona Doherty for the 1-1 tie, but the knot was quickly loosened two minutes later when
Andrea Moulton put WestConn back up by a goal. The home team drew a penalty corner inserted by Montalvo to
Ellenoire Schoen (Newtown, Conn.), who then made a beautiful cross to
Andrea Moulton for the second goal of the night.
At 50:27, Guinan again evened the score with an unassisted to goal to force overtime.
WestConn had two goals wiped from the scoreboard, with one occurring in the fourth quarter that would have ended the game in regulation. WestConn was awarded eight corners across four minutes of action, including the withdrawn goal by the Wolves due to a foul by the hosts.
The Wolves remain at home for a 6 p.m. game on Friday against the University of Maine-Farmington at the WAC.
