DANBURY, Conn. - Senior midfielder
Kadin Talho (Waterbury, Conn.) fired home the game winner on a penalty kick attempt in the 57th minute of play to lift the Western Connecticut State University men's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over visiting Plymouth State University in a Little East Conference battle on Saturday afternoon at the Westside Athletic Complex.
With the win, the Wolves improved to 7-3-2 overall and 3-0 in league play, while the Panthers dropped to 4-5-2 and 0-2. It marked the 38th meeting between the two teams. Plymouth State's last win at the WAC came 10 years ago today.Â
The hosts dominated for the majority of the match as they outshot the visitors, 25-13, while racking up six corner kick opportunities. The Panthers managed just one.Â
WestConn broke the ice when junior forward
Kamal Sabar (Brooklyn, N.Y.) took a pass from rookie Nikolas Santana (New Haven, Conn.) and launched a shot into the top corner from 20 yards out. The Wolves continued to control play while firing a pair of shots that ended up escaping the arms of the Panther goalie, but each ended up banging off the post. Plymouth managed to break into the box on a rush while being hauled down by a WestConn defender. It set up a penalty kick goal from senior midfielder Sondre Asheim (Klepp, Norway), knotting the count at 1-1 heading into halftime.
The Wolves continued to rack up the shots before Talho was fouled in the box. He then calmly stepped up and snuck a penalty kick attempt just inside the right post for the would-be game-winner. WestConn junior netminder
Zachary Benson (Milford, Conn.) improved to 7-0-1 and stopped six shots, while Plymouth State goalkeeper Nicolas Cornejo (Durham, N.H.) dropped to 3-5-1 and recorded five saves.
The Wolves don't get much rest as they return to the field tomorrow at 4 p.m., hosting non-league opponent United States Merchant Marine Academy.
